Abstract

Mycoplasma synoviae is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause subclinical upper respiratory infections in chickens, turkeys, and other avian species. It can also cause exudative tendinitis and synovitis, known as infectious synovitis. To inhibit the growth of this bacterium, Rosemary essential oil (RMEO) was employed. Rosemary is rich in rosmarinic acid, rosmaridiphenol, carnosol, epirpsmanol, carnosic acid, rosmanol, and isorosmanol, which inhibit bacterial growth. The study was conducted to (1) assess the minimum inhibitory concentration and zone of inhibition; and (2) evaluate the potency level of RMEO. The treatments were replicated three times and laid out in a two-factor completely randomized design. The minimum inhibitory concentration of RMEO shows inhibition at concentrations of 25% to 100% against Mycoplasma synoviae of Philippine native chickens. . .
